Sorry for the delay. I thought I'd get back with a solution. Everything wasn't as bad as one might have previously thought. The panels indeed have a sandwich construction but with a wooden frame about 50mm on the outer edge (total for both panels) and cc30 (since each panel is 240x30cm.

So it will be as I planned - renovation plasterboard, 30mm drywall screws where it's just hardboard (to not damage the vapor barrier more than the previous owner already has) and about 50mm screws at the rafters. Maybe even a bit of glue too.

It will probably be tricky but I’ll try with a panel lift.

Hopefully, someone else can benefit from the answer.

Hi, I have the exact same type of ceiling in the bedrooms in the house I just bought and am considering doing the same thing by plastering over the existing one to avoid the seams. Did it work to screw up the plasterboards with cc 30 or was it not worth the effort and just as well to keep the ceiling to avoid a lot of headaches?
