Hi, we are going to install shelves in our wardrobes (built-in, seems like they're not standard measurements).

Looking at various board materials and wondering what is most suitable?
The idea is to paint them white, and a smooth surface is quite important for the clothes.

Is it more worthwhile to buy more expensive boards with a good surface, like plywood and paint directly, or something cheaper like OSB that probably needs to be filled first?

Is there any other good, cheap board material? I feel lost in this subject.

I would like to keep costs down without compromising too much on the final result.

Check Jula or similar stores, they have melamine shelves that are okay. If you're going to cut them anyway, you can choose a length that maximizes the number of shelves with minimal waste.

(Even though pull-out shelves/baskets are obviously superior to fixed shelves when it comes to clothes.)

If there is a Bauhaus nearby, they have quite a good price on such shelves👍

It's not too picky about what material you use for shelves. If you want them white and smooth, melamine-coated chipboard is practical. OSB seems less practical. It has an uneven surface. You can also get shelves made of edge-glued pine. Or uncoated chipboards. But you won't get as smooth a surface then.
