Hi,

Started tearing up plastic flooring and linoleum tiles in the basement. The walls were also covered with some kind of jute fabric that has been removed. The house is from the 30s, and it is unknown if any drainage has been done at all. The humidity in the summer rises to 60-70 while it is lower in the winter, of course. I've noticed that the plaster is peeling on the exterior walls. But now I also saw that it is starting to peel on the interior walls now that I tore down the fabric. Should we be concerned when even the interior walls seem to have become damp?

The slab is uninsulated and moisture migrates upwards, it gets worse with carpets on the floor.

So most likely the moisture migration is due to the linoleum tiles that have been there then?

Yes, to some extent, but the slab will absorb moisture even without them.

Exactly. Whether it would absorb more moisture just because the moisture is prevented from seeping elsewhere is a matter of differing opinions. But in my mind, it sounds very unlikely that this would be the case.

Would drainage hypothetically help prevent the slab from absorbing moisture? Or how is it with such an old house?

No. The reason why moisture is absorbed into the slab is the absence of a capillary-breaking layer. That is, the slab is cast directly on the ground.

Thanks for the response!
