We moved into a house built in 1932 six months ago. It used to be heated with oil until 2001 and then geothermal heating. The chimney has not been warm until we installed a soapstone stove in October this year.

In our daughter's room upstairs, we removed a wardrobe that had been standing against the chimney, and there we found mold stains. It's obvious that it comes from above in a cold chimney. Could one clean it with the right products and paint it with silicate paint to see if it comes back, or do you think more extensive measures are needed?

It should be mentioned that there has also been a breakthrough from the chimney in the bathroom one floor down, but not mold.

It might also not hurt to put a roof on the chimney (chimney cap) so that the chimney stack does not get so damp from rain and snow.

You can try Jape mögelfri, you can read more about it at http://www.jape.se If that doesn't help, you might have to knock off the mold-infested plaster and then re-plaster it.

Thanks for the response! We have a hood on the chimney, but I'm wondering if the problem might be that it's too large and rain is blowing into the ducts anyway. I'll have a look at it...
