I am renovating the workshop and found something I don't know what it is. The workshop has always been uninsulated and my find is on the inside of the roof. I don't know if it's some kind of fungus; it looks and feels like very tough insulation/Treetex that is quite firmly attached to the wood. However, the wood is healthy if you remove the "fungus."

There weren't any large areas, as the picture shows, and two somewhat larger ones are approximately 20x20cm and 10x10cm. Given their placement and volume, it doesn't feel like insulation.

Close-up of a brown, fibrous material resembling insulation, attached to the wooden ceiling of a workshop, possibly mistaken for mold or fungus. Mysterious substance on the wooden ceiling of an uninsulated shed, resembling dense, fibrous material; possibly fungus or insulation remnant.

Anyone have any ideas?

Slightly bad pictures, it could possibly be some sort of insect cocoons too?

It appears to be silk. Caterpillars have spun cocoons. Make pajamas out of it or leave it as it is, it does no harm. The silk is very strong, I found two wooden planks that were joined like this: couldn't get them apart!
