We have an opening in the fence of just over 4m where we were planning to put a gate. Ideally, we want both a larger gate with two sections for the car and a smaller one for use with a bicycle or when just walking in. The proposal is as follows: If you count with 100x100 posts: post, 3m car gate, post, 70 cm gate, post. I've been standing there for the longest time wondering if it will work or if the gates will be too narrow. The entrance is at a right angle to the street, so you have to partially turn into the driveway. I've test-driven with a temporary post and it works just barely, but I'm still a bit uncertain.

So my question: Does anyone know what the usual width for "regular" car gates is, or does anyone have experience with a fairly narrow gate where you have to turn in, and how does it work?

I have a double gate, where normally one half is opened to drive in with the car. The gate opening is approximately 2.4m, but then the gate is at a 45° angle to the street, so there's no need to turn at the entrance itself. It's possible to drive in without problems, but I wouldn't want it any narrower. Also, keep in mind that hinges and locks reduce some of the width. Additionally, they protrude and threaten to scratch the paint.

Consider turning radii and such things. If you're going in with a car and trailer, more space is required if you need to turn.
