Hello!

I have a ceiling made of reed and plaster, is there a risk of bringing the entire ceiling down if you cut grooves for electrical conduits/pipes across the reed and thus cut the reed?

The reed mats should indeed be fastened with wire at reasonably even intervals across, as there is a risk you might cut the wires and cause a sag/drop.

The question is whether you should use a router, a tool or machine that is cutting or finely serrated (here some might suggest a Multimaster) probably causes less damage. Make two parallel cuts and clear between them.

If you make an attempt, you should be prepared that in the worst case, you might have to put up plasterboard on the ceiling, but what doesn't one do to avoid ugly exposed cables... ;)

Best regards,
Ronnie

Our reed was secured with chicken wire nailed to approximately every dm2. If you can somehow mill away just the plaster and the reed, the rest should stay in place. Ours was very difficult to remove. We had to use a crowbar to pull it down. But I think it might be challenging to then plaster it so that it becomes the same as the old plaster.
