I was thinking of lowering the ceiling in the living room to install spotlights and speakers. I was thinking of making a box that goes around the entire room, about 30cm wide x 11cm high. I was planning to build this in MDF.

But I also thought about lowering a larger part of the ceiling that comes from the hallway. Since I have lowered the ceiling in the hallway with spotlights and speakers, it might look nice to extend this lowering a bit into the living room. This box will be significantly larger, about 1.8m wide, 4m long, and 11cm high.

How should I build this box? I have started framing with 45x45 that I build down with spacers to about 11cm. But what should I cover it with? MDF? Gypsum? How should I attach the frames? It seems like the frames I have put up are stable with 5x8 screws and red plugs. Is this sufficient? How close should the cross frames be? cc30 or cc60?

I have cut a 1cm MDF board into 11cm strips which I thought to use as "edge". Should I buy MDF and cover the rest with it too? How do I handle joints, edges, and corners?

There are quite a few questions, but all help is appreciated!!

To clarify my question:

Can you achieve "perfect" seams if you use 10 mm MDF board? Can you glue the seams?

When I used plasterboard in the hallway, I noticed tendencies of cracking between the plasterboards.

I had used plaster for simplicity's sake. Did you use joint tape when you spackled? Otherwise, that's why it cracks later on.

To begin with, I didn't use any strips. Then the joint cracked.

I sanded down the joints afterward and used joint strips. I managed to get all the joints except one to look good.

What I'm wondering is if it's easier to get the corners right if you use MDF. Then you can glue and sand, and you'll have sharp corners?

If you were to use plaster, you would have to use a corner bead, right?

I would probably use MDF, glue, and a nail gun with 30 or 50mm nails. That way it holds and is easy to make it look nice.

I think that's probably the best. It makes it easy to achieve neat corners!

The only thing I'm unsure about is how to handle the long seams in the middle of the ceiling box where two MDF boards meet.

What do you do there? Do you make sure there's an underlying support and then fill in any unevenness? Do you need fiberglass tape?

Anyone with experience building ceiling boxes this large? 4mx2mx11cm??

use gips then apply microlit on it,
NEVER cracks
