Hello,

I have scraped off peeling paint from the ceiling in the hallway of my apartment. The material under the paint is soft, like sand, and since I don’t know much about building materials, I wonder if it might possibly be spray-plastered, maybe called grängat? As it’s an old house (1940), I am concerned about the risk of asbestos in the ceiling. Perhaps used as fire protection, for example. I became most curious because it is so porous and fine-grained.

Best regards,
Peter

Difficult to know exactly which material you are referring to, is the material part of the paint or a separate layer under the paint? A picture would help. If it is old textured paint, similar to example example, then there may be asbestos in the paint.
Asbestos was used in textured paint as reinforcement, not for fire protection in that case. However, you cannot get definitive answers here, better to send the materials for analysis.

Yes, I understand that it's very difficult to answer these kinds of questions in a forum. There is an independent layer under the paint, with a layer of yellowish paint on top, and then white ceiling paint on that. I'm attaching a picture. I'm thinking of sending it for analysis, mostly because I'm curious, and it doesn't even seem expensive to have an analysis done. Close-up of a wall showing layers of peeling paint in various colors, including yellowish and white, with visible texture and rough surface areas.
