I have of course read the threads that already exist, but I am still a bit uncertain and hoping for some practical tips. We have a room measuring 4.2 x 4.8m that is to be converted into a home theater. The reason for lowering the ceiling is to make room for cables, surround speakers, and spotlights. The minimum drop is really about 12 cm to accommodate the speakers, but there are pipes branching just before the ceiling, so it's probably more practical to lower it below the branching. This results in about a 25 cm drop instead. The ceiling height is 2.6, so it shouldn't look strange.

The size of the room means that regardless of the solution, it needs to be spliced. But perhaps splicing metal profiles isn't too tricky, for example? In a thread, someone wrote about using 70mm profiles and inserting a 70x45 timber to reinforce. Could that be something?

Open to suggestions!
