We are renovating our granite wall, which is now a wall (removed the wooden parts, as the roof had collapsed). Probably from the 1850s in the northern Skåne countryside.

We want to renovate as non-toxically as possible, using portland cement where stones need to be reattached or the wall is most damaged, and lime plaster on top.

The mason we hired mixes "liquid lime" into the portland cement. He claims that the mixture becomes more workable. It's in a canister that he pours in.

He says it's just lime, which I doubt and suspect it might be some chemical that has been altered.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'd like to hear if you have any idea what it might be :-)

Lime is a word with many meanings. It is used, among other things, for calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, which occurs in a liquid state. Maybe that is what he mixed in?

Ah! Sounds reasonable... Thanks!
