yes, it's not optimal but the electrician said it was ok if properly sealed around the box, which was apparently not done

I think you misunderstand, the problem is the air in the flex conduits that then gets cooled and can condense and then run down to the box. If out can cause a short circuit.

It can be prevented by sealing the pipe at one end with insulation or similar, but it feels like an unnecessary solution since you can instead place the conduits on the warm side of the insulation and avoid the problem altogether.
