Hello!

We have made a hole in the joist for a laundry chute. It comes out on the lower floor in the corner of the laundry room, where we envision that the laundry will come out onto a bench where it can be sorted. On the upper floor, we will have a hatch in the wall right by the stairs down, which is in a family room, and on the other side of that wall is an office room where the drum will protrude into.

The joist is fully insulated as the heat pump will stand there. All of this leads to two things I would appreciate some help thinking about.

Since the joist is insulated, should the box that the chute is in also be insulated in a good way, either by having two layers of boards with some insulation or a pipe in the box with insulation around it? Then perhaps there should also be a thicker or suitably insulated hatch at the bottom?

I have been looking for a good and somewhat discreet hatch, what do you think about an inspection hatch that you just paint along with the wall, like: this one

No insulation is likely needed since you have a hatch that keeps the air column still. An inspection hatch is not sufficient; it should be simple and solid.

Thanks, I'll keep looking for a hatch; it's hard to find one in the size 200x200-250x250 that isn't an inspection hatch.

The entire box with the air gap juts out into the room; I imagine there's about as much material aside from the insulation between the box in the ceiling and the office on the floor above as in the insulated joist. But I have very little understanding of soundproofing; it just occurred to me now that we're actually removing insulation and making a connection with a hatch.

Build a stylish hatch in wood? That's what we did for our laundry chute. Or have one custom-made at a carpentry shop if you don't want to build it yourself. And make sure the chute is large enough so that jeans don't get stuck, and that there are no seams that can tear tights or similar items.
