I encountered that issue and was about to go insane. I glued the strip to the seam instead of putty underneath to minimize the thickness. It worked, except in two places. Discovered after puttying and priming.
Sanded off putty and strip from the bad spots. Initially, I glued the strip, let the glue dry for several days, puttied, etc. When I redid it, I only let the glue dry for about 20 minutes before puttying.
The next day, it had come loose. The water in the putty had apparently dissolved the half-dried glue.
Some swear words, new sanding, glued it on again. This time, I let it dry for 5 hours, puttied. The same thing happened again.
More swear words, redo. NOW I let the glue dry for 5 hours, then primed before puttying. When the paint had dried for 2 hours, I puttied. It worked. The paint isolated the glue from the putty.
This was at the vacation house during the winter, so I was only there 1-2 days a week, which delayed the final painting by several weeks.
