Hi, I've put up a drywall and now intend to paint it. What I wonder is, is it enough to spackle and then paint directly, or is it better to wallpaper the wall first to get it smooth, and then paint on the wallpaper?

What is the easiest and best way to do it? I want to paint the wall but have it flat and smooth.

Thanks in advance!

First, apply a fine weave - like microlit. Then paint on it.

It works fine to paint directly on the plaster after the usual filling/sanding without needing to put up any fabric.

Fabric gives the wall a stronger surface, better withstands minor impacts and scratches. The fabric also helps to "reinforce" the wall so that there are no cracks at the joints if the wall moves. In the end result, or the paint itself, you won't notice a difference whether there's fabric or not. The paint's texture is the surface you see.

Forgot to mention that a weave or wallpaper won't hide a bad spackling in side lighting; there will be shadows regardless. So spackling and sanding are important whether you choose a weave or to paint directly.
