My father-in-law put up a temporary board against the facade in the garage where an old trash can had been. I asked him about it but it was for the board, and he was a little unsure. So I thought I'd check with you if anyone recognizes the material.

  • A temporary board mounted in a garage with speckled surface, used to cover a spot where a trash bin was placed, seeking material identification.
  • Temporary panel installed against garage facade where an old trash can stood, with wooden framing and surrounding materials visible.
It looks like an eternit panel (i.e. asbestos cement). However, somewhat confusing color difference between the images.

the bottom picture is better, the other one turned out a bit dark.

Could also be a fiber cement board.

When did he put it up and was it bought new then?

He put it up about 1 month ago. He has no idea how old it is. He claims he found the record at his job.

The lower image feels more like typical eternit. But as 13th Marine writes, the time of purchase says a lot.

Asbestos hasn't been used since the mid-70s, so the odds seem very low that he got hold of one.

The board is very heavy and he had to drill before screwing it in place. Could it still be an eternit board?? Are eternit boards a hard material?

Yes, eternit is hard. If it is eternit, then let it stay.

If you bought it in the last 20 years, it's a Steni board! Or Minarit, different brand names.

It costs approximately 500 to have the disc tested. You send in a sample of about 5*5 cm. I use A-analys, everything is handled via mail and email. But there are surely many others who offer that service.

I found a Flemish website (recycling center) about asbestos. They describe a simple test you can perform yourself
https://www.geel.be/product.aspx?id=2642

Translation of the test
Flame test

If there is asbestos in a certain material, you can easily test it yourself: Take a piece of the suspected material and hold it in a flame. When you see fibers that continue to glow and do not deform, you must deal with asbestos. Before taking action: read this brochure first. Being thoughtless and panicking has a counterproductive effect.

this is a minerit board.
It doesn't become more convincing just because you say it twice, even if you use 4 times as many words.
Tip is to include a picture or explain why you are sure of your thing (e.g. I work at a minerit factory)
