In my house from '36, at some point, someone framed and created two rooms upstairs where there was previously one room. The strange thing is that they drywalled but didn't install any insulation between the studs. So the sound insulation is almost nonexistent.
The wall that divides the rooms, I will open from one side and insulate. There is yet another wall that borders the other room, but it is built of thick standing planks with tretex on both sides. I thought I might leave that one as is. It's the old wall against the attic space. But the wall facing the hallway, I would prefer not to open. Does it still pay off to open and insulate it?
It should be said that the ambition is not to make it completely silent; I have the old plank floor with sunken sawdust underneath, and nothing will be demolished there. But the kids shouldn't have to whisper not to disturb each other.

I will continue the thread. As I mentioned, I will tear down the plasterboard on a wall and insulate it. Ideally, I wouldn't want to reinstall plasterboard but do as it is everywhere else: wood and wood fiber boards. The problem I can't get around is that there is a fairly large space under the wooden floor to the insulation. So no matter how I insulate the walls, sound will travel between the rooms.
Today, we listened a bit to how sound was dampened in the original wall, i.e., the one consisting of thick planks with tretext on both sides against the old attic. It sounded quite loud in between, and now I'm wondering if it's worth framing with 45 mm and insulating there?
As for the floor... it goes very much against my will, but I'm starting to consider if one should not make a small hole here and there and spray foam so it fills between the beams. Or what can one use? And will it be worth it?
