In my opinion, a screw is too visible, so for the oak skirting board, I would have nailed it.
I placed two nails in each fastening point, where the lower one is in the "syllen" and the upper one is hopefully in a wall stud (or also in the syllen).
I assume of course that you have wooden studs behind...

I would also use nails. Preferably brass nails because I think they look nice with oak.
I only screw moldings if they need to be painted so that I have the option to fill and paint over the screw head.
