Hello

Thinking about which ceiling to choose... Right now there's just regular drywall on the ceiling, but we don't want to tackle plastering, so considering either MDF boards from ByggMax, or pre-painted white tongue-and-groove panel boards (kind of like beadboard, but without the bead...)

We're considering these boards

The price is tempting, so right now it's leaning towards the board (130 kr / m2)

The installation instructions say
If a hammer and nails are used during the installation of the panel, the length of the nails should be at least 35 mm.
When using a nail gun, the length of the staples should be at least 35 mm. Back width from 10.5 - 11.5 mm.
During installation, screws can also be used. We recommend construction screws of type BFK 35 4.2 x 35. Staples of type CS 500 or CS 14B/76 Duplex staples.

I don't have a nail/staple gun, so I was thinking screws. But then I found this thread

And I'm getting totally paranoid...

If we're going with panel boards, there are no problems. Just nail the stuff up... But how do I handle the MDF boards so they don't fall down?

What is above the plaster in the ceiling?

Nail batten of some kind. Can't quite remember. CC 30 type.

Then it will be firmly set.

Are you planning to install the new ceiling on the drywall or remove it first?

Then it should hold solidly.
The question is whether you should use nails, staples, screws, glue, pins, or some combination...

The drywall will stay. Initially, I considered plastering. But after reading how impossible it is to get a good result, and knowing how long it takes to just plaster walls, we've switched to something that's quicker to install...

is the idea to attach the new ceiling through the plasterboard to the framing underneath, in that case, probably only panel boards work to mount across the underlying framing. the mdf ceiling likely requires approx. 28cm c/c framing

You are right about that. The studs might not be so close together that you can attach at cc 15cm as they want you to.

Could it work to screw where possible, and then also complement by gluing?

Sounds definitely easiest to hire a painter to fix the ceiling.

That's where we started. But when not a single painter came back with a quote, we got tired :(

So now we wanted something quick and easy we could fix ourselves

This is what the plaster looks like in the ceiling. The long sides of the plaster are, of course, in the same direction as we want to install sheets/boards... So even if we use boards, which are easy to just nail up, I'm unsure what there is under the plaster to attach them to... It's carpenters who installed the plaster, which is why I'm not quite sure how the nailing battens are positioned.

Felt like I wasn't making any progress... Considering how the boards are screwed in, it looks like the battens are in the same direction as we want to install the ceiling panel (whether we choose boards or MDF panels). And that won't work...

So I unscrewed a drywall panel to see how the joists are placed.

Great! OSB under the drywall. So I can nail wherever I want :D Leaning towards pre-painted panel boards right now, which we can nail up with a nail gun. That way I won't have to worry about MDF panels falling down :P

But why not just spackle and paint the existing drywall?

Yes, that was the idea from the start. That's why there's plasterboard there :) But we can't find anyone who wants to do it for us, and I can't do it myself. I even thought about using raw wood on the walls to avoid plastering there, but the wife refused to paint all the boards, so now she has to plaster and wallpaper/paint the plasterboard instead. And then there will be wood on the ceiling instead.
