I need to make an inspection hatch in the ceiling of the bathroom in the basement. I'm in the process of lowering the ceiling to hide the plumbing and underfloor heating pipes coming down from the kitchen and bathroom on the residential floor, and in the new ceiling, a hatch is needed so I can access the adjustment for the underfloor heating and keep an eye on a couple of connections.
I plan to use the hatch from a classic old metal medicine cabinet to get a ready-made frame with a door that can be easily closed. By cutting away the back, I can attach the sides to the rules and everything is rectangular without extra work.
If anyone has a better idea or another solution to a similar "problem," I would be grateful for tips, especially if it is simpler than the solution I described above. As mentioned, it's mostly to avoid having to devise some kind of locking mechanism for the hatch in the closed position that I'm not building my own little frame with hinges and cladding it with plasterboard, which I would probably have done if it were a wall.
