How well do timber frame/stone wool insulate compared to lecablocks?
I have a 1940s house with a garage in the basement and the typical concrete ramp down to a pair of swing doors. I have previously divided the garage in half and made a TV room out of one half. Now I'm about to replace the old swing doors. The plan is to build a wall and put in a regular entrance door, possibly a slightly wider model.
It will be a small wall section, about 2.5 m wide, 2 m high. I have received quotes to build this either
- with a wooden frame, 145 mm stone wool, plywood and gypsum on the inside and some form of fiber cement board on the outside, or
- with 150 mm lecablock and plaster on the inside and outside
I think leca with plaster would look very nice on the outside and fit well with the rest of the plastered foundation, but what about the insulation? Will the garage become noticeably colder with lecablock?

- Lättklinker (Leca) (λ=0.079–0.120)
- Mineral wool (λ=0.034–0.040)
Well, lecablocks are not intended to replace the insulation, but rather the framework/structure. So it's a bit like comparing apples and oranges.
Instead, build a narrower leca wall with insulation behind it, so you get both.
