Hello!
I'm helping a friend who has torn down a wall.
The question is whether it's possible to splice the heavy beam between the 2 blue arrows on the right to make a larger door opening.

My thought is to screw on a piece of the same dimension over the gap, or will it be too weak?

Hello,
And welcome to the forum.
However, your link to the image does not work...
Press the button at the bottom right of your post, select Edit and "Ladda upp bild/video" followed by Insert and it might work.

Hello
I don't understand at all actually.
A 5cm seam piece? To make a 5cm gap?

It's probably fine if you leave the old ones in place and screw the new one together. If you're worried, you can use a limträbalk instead.

Edit: I mean letting them overlap over a longer stretch, not just a patch right over the joint.

Oops, I was probably a bit unclear, not the same dimension as the gap but as the beam.
We want to open up all the way between the outer blue arrows.

That's what I was thinking, overlap as far as possible to the right and the same amount to the left.

You can do it however you like. The important thing is that the new horizontal board next to the old one stays on top of a vertical board.
It's not the length of the overlap itself.

If you are demolishing beyond the blue arrows, it's likely a beam that needs to be installed. Depending on what this wall currently supports.

Edit; clarifying that it must be extended all the way over the new doorway. From one vertical post to another vertical post to be as functional as today.

Great! Thanks for the good and quick responses.👍

The right beam seems to still have its left support.

What about the left support of the left beam? Does the beam continue to the left, and what support points does it have there? If that's unknown, perhaps it should have a pole under it beneath the left blue car....

thanks for the response!
It will probably be as P.Öberg writes, we'll place a beam next to the old one with supports at both ends.

Keep in mind that a heavier beam is required because you will have a longer span.

I did like this in a similar case, placed a VKR pipe under the entire beam before tearing down the wall piece to the left of the opening, see thread. In the picture below, there is a missing stud/support directly to the right of the visible electrical outlet,

Nice!
Thanks for the tip!👍
