Hello!
I'm helping a friend who has torn down a wall.
The question is whether it's possible to splice the heavy beam between the 2 blue arrows on the right to make a larger door opening.
My thought is to screw on a piece of the same dimension over the gap, or will it be too weak?
Hello,
And welcome to the forum.
However, your link to the image does not work...
Press the button at the bottom right of your post, select Edit and "Ladda upp bild/video" followed by Insert and it might work.

You can do it however you like. The important thing is that the new horizontal board next to the old one stays on top of a vertical board.
It's not the length of the overlap itself.
If you are demolishing beyond the blue arrows, it's likely a beam that needs to be installed. Depending on what this wall currently supports.
Edit; clarifying that it must be extended all the way over the new doorway. From one vertical post to another vertical post to be as functional as today.

If you plan to demolish beyond the blue arrows, a beam probably needs to be inserted, depending on what this wall now supports.
Edit: To clarify, it must run all the way across the new door opening. From one vertical stud to another to be just as functional as today.
The right beam seems to still have its left support.
What about the left support of the left beam? Does the beam continue to the left, and what support points does it have there? If that's unknown, perhaps it should have a pole under it beneath the left blue car....
The right beam seems to have its left support remaining.
The left beam's left support, what happens with that? Does the beam continue to the left and what support points does it have there? If that's unknown, maybe there should be a post under it under the left blue car....
thanks for the response!
It will probably be as P.Öberg writes, we'll place a beam next to the old one with supports at both ends.
In a similar case, I did this by placing a VKR beam under the entire beam before I tore down the wall section to the left of the opening, see thread. In the picture below, there is a missing stud/support directly to the right of the visible power outlet.
