Sawed at 45 degrees. But it doesn't fit. What do you do?

Hold the too-long board on the outside of the rule as you want it to sit. Then draw from the inside and cut along the lines.

What angle should it be positioned at?
 
If the "hole" is not completely square, there will be other angles.

As mentioned, saw a slightly longer plank and mark/scribe

Your two different 45-degree cuts don't have equally long sides.
