Hello!
There is a beam above the stove that is burned on the inside to about half of its thickness.
I believe that beam supports the entire chimney!!
How can we replace it?
The house is from 1929.
The entire hole behind the stove and around it was covered. You couldn't see the beam or the bricks before we dug it out.
The stove is in the basement and we think that before it was installed (probably in the 60s) there was a baking oven in its place.
The plan is to move the kitchen from the basement to the first floor and install a stove insert/water jacket (see drawing) in its place, but regardless, the beam probably needs to be replaced.
What can be done?

  • Old wood-burning stove with a charred beam above and exposed brick behind, set in a basement wall. The stove shows signs of wear and soot marks.
  • Drawing of a chimney structure overlay on a brick wall above an old fireplace. Parts of the structure are sketched in white lines, likely illustrating a stove plan.
