Currently renovating a room in the guesthouse and would love to remove this elevation in the floor. I guess there used to be a stove here... The house is old and I know nothing about this kind of work. How should I proceed to remove this and thus gain more floor space in the room? Anything in particular to keep in mind?

Out of pure curiosity, I would like to know why this part of the house is made of brick while the rest is wood. What function did it serve?

Would it be okay to lay a vinyl floor directly on the concrete here afterwards?

Red cottage with a brick extension beside a tree, surrounded by grass. A white bench swing is in the yard next to a wheelbarrow. Concrete platform in a corner of a room with kettlebells and an extension cord on the floor. Walls appear to be roughly plastered.

Most of the time, animals were kept in the brick part of the barn... moisture and expenses from the animals can be hard on wood.

Regarding the concrete, you can just chip it away.

First, tap with a crowbar/sledgehammer/pick before you rent/buy/borrow a jackhammer; sometimes old unreinforced concrete is surprisingly easy to remove.
