I have general home carpentry skills but haven't tried plastering (apart from a few test walls). Now I'm going to plaster the basement wall and I think I could get away with it since my goal isn't to achieve a smooth wall. I've looked at a few different walls and personally like the rustic style and have taken a liking to walls with large sweeping irregularities. It looks lively and I like the contrast between white uneven walls against dark wood details.

Can anyone share tips and tricks for such an execution? What technique is behind the "right" uneven finish? Am I correct in assuming it's easier to achieve this expression as a novice or is it wrong?

Polish freehand, not much more is needed to make it uneven.
