Are there any special moldings in something like plastic or something? Or is it just to put small wood molding pieces around? Does anyone have any ideas? Attached image A rough-cut hole in a white ceiling with a wooden beam protruding through it, possibly needing trim or a finish.

Best regards, Anders

Cut a piece of MDF, e.g., 8mm, large enough to cover the hole around the post. If you wish, you can also mill an attractive profile around the edge or simply chamfer the edge. Cut out for the post and divide the "frame" into a U. Install and paint.

Depends on the level of difficulty you feel up for.

The difficult option:
Wooden quarter round that you carve with a knife to fit well against the post. Any gaps are covered with latex sealant.

The less difficult:
Styrofoam quarter round that you can press against the post and glue in place. Any gaps are covered with latex sealant.

Thank you so much for the tips. MDF was not a bad idea... and I didn't even know polystyrene moldings existed... can they also be bent?

Yes, they have a certain amount of flexibility. Easy to work with, I think, usually glue them with latex.
