Hello expertise! The holiday project is the old cleaning closet that will become a wardrobe into the bedroom. I need to close off the old door with a plasterboard. How do I attach it? Should I keep the studs that the door is mounted on? Or remove everything and start from scratch with a new stud in the lightweight concrete wall? It has to be smooth and straight so I can putty and paint on it.

The wooden stud that the door is mounted on is 21.5 mm thick.

Tips? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance for the answer!

  • A white door in a hallway, partially open, with visible wooden frame and exposed edges, next to another closed door.
  • A grey wall partially covering a former door opening, leading to a bedroom with a window and polka-dot curtains.
Lift off the door, possibly unscrew the hinges, and screw the drywall into the frame of the closet?

It looks like the frame is "recessed" compared to the existing wall, so it should be flush with the existing wall (hard to see in the pictures).

  • A door partially removed with visible hinges and chipped wall edges, highlighted in blue, suggesting adjustments for alignment with the existing wall.

Thanks for the answer, the rule is level with the wall, I would say!

Drywall is usually 13 mm and the rule that's there is 22 mm.

  • Close-up of a wall edge showing the alignment of drywall and a 22mm wooden batten next to a door frame.
  • Close-up of a wall showing a section with exposed wooden framing and plaster, illustrating a drywall project with focus on measurement details.

I'm not quite following... Are you going to cover the outside (the direction the wardrobe opens)? Then you just have to put plasterboard over the opening, spackle, paint - done?

How do I attach the drywall that needs to be flush with the studs and not on the outside? Are there brackets?

If there's no stud to screw into, you need to add a stud. It's important that the transition between the old and new wall is "rigid," otherwise there will be a crack there.

Ok, so it requires another stud there at the back! I was planning to set it edge to edge with angle brackets but maybe I need to rethink that.
