Does it work? I'm just now searching for the simplest solution and this really sounds like it. My problem is that I can't use hole finders like "Hole in one" because my outlets are "occupied." As I understand it, magnets only work on outlets that are empty?
I can't answer if the other solution works, but when it comes to the magnets, they also work on boxes that have some electronics in them. It doesn't really require much space, but sure, there can't be a screwed-in switch or similar.

So if you have that, do you need to disconnect it? Does an electrician need to do it?

No, just insert the magnet into the box, turn off the power first as a safety precaution. If there is space, it's good if you can insert, for example, a reduced box cover first, to protect the wires. There is a risk of damaging the wires if you don't use the hole saw lightly.
