How to dimension carport/terrace?
No one?
I'm picking up this thread myself as I'm going to work on a similar project... I'm curious about the span of the above-mentioned beam, can it handle 4 m? Planning to have a partially buried carport/terrace of 4x8 m. Same thing here with lecawall on slab. Regards Tjeppeknaster said:
My carport/garage is W 7.5m x D 6.5m.
The laminated beam has the dimensions 140x270 and the pillar 140x140, and it is possible to achieve a 4m span on that beam, depending on the snow zone.
Moelven's beam program http://www.iat.inadire.se/WebLagerbalk/Lagerbalk.aspx
where you can input your conditions.
kwattro - if you need construction tips, I am happy to share my experiences as I managed a rather elegant solution with the combination of some form of terraced carport with a patio and enclosed outdoor room on top.

Thanks for that. I would love to learn about your build. I'm planning to do exactly the same thing you did. However, I'm waiting until next year for the conservatory...being as stingy as I am... How did you solve the roof/floor for example? tongue and groove boards and roofing felt? or sheet metal on that? regards, Thomas

I am attaching a small SketchUp image to explain the principle of the roof construction, and I'll take some photos during the day for further illustration. I've drawn up a section of the roof; you can see the rafters (45x220) with glued and nailed battens along the sides (green) onto which the raw board is laid, also glued and nailed (mostly used a nail gun just to fasten them down until the glue cured).
The entire thing is covered with roofing felt, and on the felt sits a "sacrificial board." In my case, I split 45x70 pressure-treated (blue) which was screwed down into the rafter with 5x80 wood screws. Once that was done, I added the surface felt, in my case, I chose Byggmax Glaciär 3 which was laid in a single long sheet from the far end, over the "ridge," and down to the other end. Those rolls are 7m if I remember correctly, so I only got a few centimeters of overlap on each sheet.
This way, I completely avoided seams in the surface felt. I folded it up along the sides of the rafters and cut it off at the height of the "sacrificial board." I placed PL400 on the sacrificial board and fastened band steel into it; I think the width is a little over a decimeter. Once the glue cured, I used a rubber mallet to knock the edges down slightly, to create a dome over it all. If you want to go overkill, you can rustproof the band steel, but in my opinion, the band steel will last at least as long as the roofing felt, so when the felt needs replacing, I can change the band steel too.
Then there should be some form of flooring over it all...
I laid out decking, which I assembled in sections about 700x2000mm, fastening the decking evenly onto an underlying decking piece that runs down the middle between the rafters. If something drops between the decking, or when it comes time to address the felt, I just unscrew 10-20 screws and lift away the decking in sections.
Regarding the sunroom, you should (at least in my opinion) build it simultaneously. The frame for the room needs to be properly secured to the rafters, you can't just float it in the same way as the decking.
I will take some photos during the day and upload them here, so just ask if you/you have any more questions.
Take care // Erik

Thank you for the detailed response! I don't know if I will need to insulate the garage space under the deck and therefore choose to keep that option open. So even if you did it excellently, I will probably build with sloping rafters and longitudinal beams to screw the decking into later.
Grateful for tips on good roofing felt or similar. Regards, Thomas
