I've been thinking about building a ramp/bridge up to a carport roof. It's about 6 meters long. I thought of pouring a concrete foundation in the ground on one side and then letting the other end rest on the roof. I've considered handicap ramps in galvanized steel, but they are often in sections that need support underneath. I can't have any posts right underneath; it needs to hang freely. How would you have done it? Is there a sensible solution, or will it end up being a staircase instead?

  • A wooded area with a carport in the foreground and a marked line suggesting the proposed ramp path on the slope. An ATV is parked nearby.
Isn't it just a matter of using glulam beams?

I guess the roof is not designed for that load.

You can place a sheet or syllpapp on the glulam beams to reduce water pressure. Then treat it appropriately. Maybe an extra post in the corner of the carport with suitable reinforcement. I don't think it's an impossible project.

Then I'm curious about what you plan to do up there? Build a veranda?

If you're only going on the ramp, a couple of telephone poles with rough decking on top should suffice, it will surely flex but the alternative with glulam should be significantly more costly.

It is an entrance to the loft, so the carport roof will serve as an entrance to it. There will be a small veranda up there. The alternative is to build a staircase, but then we lose some space and it would be nice to avoid it.

No, it is not, other than being calculated for lots of snow.

But now it will be both snow load plus a veranda construction +ramp + people that it has to support.
