A bit difficult to describe what I mean, but I'm planning to build 3 "portals" along the house and have found this bracket. Feels a bit expensive, but maybe there aren't any alternatives, how would you have done it?
The only alternative I can think of is a post shoe directly out from the wall or a sturdy block underneath.
Would this be possible to set so that it hangs instead, or does that impair the strength?
If the mounting is as visible as in your example picture, I wouldn’t use a regular beam shoe, it doesn’t look nice. Maybe ask a blacksmith about the cost to make something similar to your picture, I agree that it was a steep price.

The beam will be painted black, so I'm considering how it would look if I paint the joist hanger as well. It has interior "wings," so only the edge that the beam attaches to will be visible. But the example picture is probably nicer anyway, which is probably what those who sell them know and hence the price unfortunately.
Thanks for the tip regarding the smith
