How thick is the wall?

I am going to mount a kitchen fan on a wall. I need to know how thick the material is that I will be screwing into. How do I go about finding that out?

Either by looking at (and trusting) a drawing or by drilling a hole and examining the matter.

If you have access to the back of the wall (e.g., another room or outside), you can easily measure your way with a tape measure. If the wall is solid, that's another question. You should find out what the wall material is and get the right type of plugs, screws, compound, etc.
