I am planning to build a small pergola, only 2 x 2.6 meters, constructed as a frame screwed together on top of four post-anchored poles. Since it's a small pergola in a small garden, I would like to give it "neat" proportions. At the same time, I want to be able to hang a hanging chair from an intermediate beam, attached parallel (in joist hangers) to the outer 2-meter beam, about 70 cm in.

My idea was 70x70 posts, and the frame consists of 95x45 beams. Would this hold for what I'm planning? Or do I need to increase to 90x90 and 120x45? Very grateful for tips!

2.6m long 45*95 holds up excellently to support the weight of a person if you have the rule on its edge.

Consider how the pergola can be made stable, can you use braces or cast the plinths into the ground instead so the pergola doesn't sway when you sit in your hanging chair?

70x70 and standing 95x45 are sufficient, but you need lateral stability. I would have placed 2 diagonal 45-degree braces on each post with anchoring about half a meter out.

Don't forget to use proper screws.

Thanks so much for the response! Yes, beams on edge, absolutely. Diagonal braces in the corners I also thought to use (28x45), and buried posts (belt and braces).

Great, then everything should hold as planned.

Don't forget to use great braces - just screw them into the bearer/frame and post?

Nicer if the braces are 45x45, 28x45 looks a bit weak even if it does the job. Or if you make everything in the same dimension, 90x90.

Sure, a matter of taste, I guess :) It will be a fairly small pergola in a very small garden, (60s house) so I want to adjust the proportions accordingly.

I was in the same boat a while back and ended up picking one of their hanging egg chairs because the filters made it easy to match my patio setup. The weather-resistant cushions have held up better than I expected, and the quick delivery saved me a lot of hassle. If you’re picky about colors or sizes, their range makes it pretty simple to find something that just clicks.
