Hello!
We are installing a stove and need to make cutouts in the beams in the attic to get approval from the chimney sweep master. I need to take 30mm at the ridge, how do I reinforce there, do I need to do it? And I also need to take 60mm from the beam in the floor of the attic (and then at the top of a wall). How do I reinforce that, do I have to? How much can I take from it without reinforcing? The beam is 120mm. the sheet metal should be removed and instead a 30mm air gap should be created. the beam is thus under the floor to the left of the chimney stack in this picture. Someone has already taken 30mm, and I need to take at least 30 more.
I'm pretty sure you can take 30 mm from the side of the heavy logs that make up the high leg without any replacement. As for the floor beam, I find it hard to understand how it connects just by looking at your photo. Can't you make a simple sketch?
Do you want to take 60 mm off the height of a beam that is 120 mm high (and probably equally wide)? That's not going to work well. It's right in the middle of the beam. In that case, you would have to put a new beam next to the old one.
Even that probably needs to be compensated for by reinforcement. I guess the logs are somewhat semi-circular and therefore difficult to glue on from the side. What is the span of the beam?
So, that beam is primarily difficult to reinforce because it is located in a wall and in the ceiling/floor between the living room and the attic. In that case, it needs to be reinforced upwards.
