Hello, everyone.

We're planning to redo our driveway, widen it, and lay paving stones. After widening, the dimensions are 6 m in width and 5 m to the garage door. We plan to dig 35 cm deep and fill with crushed rock and sand on top. I calculated to fill 30 cm with crushed rock and 5 cm of sand for the stones. Then we have a small path to the door, about 2 m long and 60 cm wide, which should be dug 20 cm or something similar.

I called the gravel folks and said I needed about 13 cubic meters of gravel. I calculated roughly 15 tons myself, but the gravel guy said I needed 26 tons?!?! When compacting, it's about 20% more?

Is this really possible, those of you who know? It sounded a lot to me – it’s about 30 sqm of driveway, and I thought it sounded insane with 26 tons.

Or am I just crazy?

Calculate 1.75 tons per cubic for unpacked material... Then, as mentioned, you should also compact it a bit, so calculating 2 tons per cubic doesn't feel wrong at all...
