Maybe old mercury paint? Vietnam apparently still uses it: https://svenska.yle.fi/a/7-1401248
In Vietnam, a Finnish company is trying to persuade businesses to stop using toxic chemicals. It is common for companies to release such chemicals directly into nature, and consumer goods can also contain them.
As the rapid industrial development continues, environmental problems in Vietnam have become increasingly extensive.
Paint is something that is best avoided. The paint can contain mercury, which the EU classifies as a particularly dangerous poison.
In Vietnam, however, it is allowed to use mercury in paint. One should be especially careful with red paint.
- One can only imagine what happens to those who apply red mercury paint on their house walls. When the paint then peels off, they have mercury all over their environment in the yard, notes chemist Jan Nylund.
(Yes, I'm joking, but only a little. Very odd with silver paint on houses, especially that old.)
If I speculate further, one might imagine someone wanted the round posts to resemble metal and therefore chose that shade.
