How far can the timber stick out through the car's tailgate?
I don't have a trailer but need 13 decking boards of 4.2 meters each. If I pack them in the car with the back seats folded down and the trunk open, the boards will stick out about 30cm. The trunk is closed as far as it can go.
Is it allowed to pack like this? What should I consider?

Consider that everything is good but secure it so it doesn't become a pick-up sticks game if you crash.
But 30 cm out is no problem.
What many ignore when driving is strapping properly for the purpose.
Then I see some people place boards on the dashboard, and during a hard brake, you might get a nice windshield if you're unlucky.

Now that this thread has been revived, I can add that at least I personally prefer a roof rack so that you utilize the car's length better and get a little less protrusion at the back. Even though it's a bit impractical to load/unload and tie down.
