I also have pipes in the basement ceiling with suspected asbestos in the bends. These pipes are approaching EOL anyway, so my plan is to encase and tape up the stuff quite carefully, then use a reciprocating saw to cut off somewhere on the straight sections... Make sure everything is enclosed so you don't need to worry so much about having the right respirator, the right filter in the vacuum cleaner, or if you've wet-cleaned enough. It's sensible to have some belt and braces with asbestos, you don't know how much you've been historically exposed to, what your own body can specifically tolerate, and you don't want those diseases and troubles. If you're a smoker, the best start to your asbestos project is to quit immediately.
