Almost embarrassing to ask, but I don't want to mess up... 
I'm going to put up renovation gypsum in my son's room on two outer walls. Brick wall on the outside.
There are already drywall panels there, and then a hysterically awful mesh/wire wallpaper that I've started to pull down, but there are about 3 million threads left to pull, so I'm giving up.
The panels are purchased, but now I'm wondering how I should attach them?
Do I have to look for the studs underneath somewhere and then cut and adjust the panels?

If the back fits well, you can glue them up with either PL600 or gypsum plaster. If it's uneven underneath, gypsum plaster is good because you can apply it quite thickly. Otherwise, screws are the way to go, and it's good to find the old studs... At the top and bottom, it usually isn't a problem; just make sure to buy screws for double gypsum. If you tap the wall, you can usually hear where the stud is approximately, and since you don't need to be careful with the old boards, you can make some holes or test drill to find them.
there will be a lot of waste if you cut the gypsum.
I recommend joint metal.
