I am planning to set up a home theater/gaming room in my basement. The room is currently unfurnished with "bare" cinder blocks. The idea is to plaster the cinder blocks and paint with silicate paint on all walls except for one. On that wall, I would like to install horizontal paneling instead. This wall is an interior wall and there are essentially two reasons why I would like to use horizontal paneling. Firstly, to run electrical and other cables behind it, and secondly for aesthetic reasons.
Is this a bad idea? As mentioned, it is an inner wall and my plan is to use steel studs if that's the case. Does it matter that one side will be adjacent to an exterior wall? (Meaning two out of four walls in the room are exterior walls, so whichever interior wall I choose, it will connect to an exterior wall) I have no plans to install any insulation in the wall, if that makes a difference.
If it would be okay to do so, what is the easiest way to install steel studs? Do you build a false wall with steel studs or attach the steel studs to the cinder block wall?
I would say it's six of one, half a dozen of the other if all the walls are dry year-round. If you have variations over the seasons or reason to suspect moisture, you could do as in sauna construction; a room (in your case a wall) within a room and have a gap between the existing and new wall, with horizontal steel studs against the floor and ceiling, as well as vertical steel or wooden studs. Attaching an image from sauna construction for illustration.
Hello. Regarding a home theater in the basement, I would recommend that you check out minhembio.com. There's a lot of good information to read there. Of course, it all depends on how serious you are about your sound. Regards, a
