I have an inspection hatch in the attic with an integrated retractable ladder from Dolle. I need to modify this with an extra fold to avoid hitting a planned shelf when the contraption is unfolded. I therefore need a hinge similar to this. What is the correct term for this type of hinge? And does anyone know where I can find these? The local hardware store was moderately interested in the question...

  • Metal hinge attached to a wooden foldable attic ladder, used for modification to avoid collision with a shelf, features screws and stamped with the number "1981".

We don't have a ladder in the hatch but use a telescopic ladder when we need to go up to the attic. This way, we can have a dresser directly below the hatch.

How do you plan to add another joint while maintaining functionality?

Have you checked if it is available as a spare part? The number is stamped on it, or send your picture and ask.

Good idea!

  • Wooden folding ladder mechanism mounted on a wall, designed to be used without opening a door. The ladder hinges are visible and secured with screws.

Yes.
That question cannot be answered with a yes.

Doesn't need to be a special hinge at the bottom, right? A "regular" one should suffice.

How and Har are quite similar when you read quickly. I thought your question was strange ;)

By doing exactly the same as the existing joints. As uselss so rightly pointed out, it is important that the joint locks in the correct direction.

What do you mean by that?

Something like this might work?

Or a slightly longer hinge?

The main thing is the ladder folds the right way so that it 'locks' under load...
Zarges might work. I'll check with them.

That's what I'm not quite getting. Either it doesn't become foldable, or it doesn't lock in the unfolded position...
Can you show a sketch?

Why wouldn't it work? As long as the hinge is at the back, it can't fold the wrong way when you step onto the ladder.

It doesn't make as neat a 'package' when folding the ladder with an extra hinge, but that's something you can live with.
