I have a wall on an outbuilding that I'm not quite sure how to "put together." The wall is insulated from the inside as follows:
Drywall, plastic, battens, 95x45 (not load-bearing in any way), asfaboard. Then comes the old frame of about 95x95 studs outside of this. Currently, the wall is only clad with metal.
My two questions are:
1. Can I nail 170mm boards + cover battens (I have materials for this lying around) directly onto the old frame?
2. I want to install a door and window in the wall, how do I do it? Can I install the door and window flush with the asfaboard (i.e., in the inner wall) and then just dress the exterior reveal with cladding boards? Of course, metal above and below the door and window. Or is that not adequate?

I see no problems with the construction you have outlined, on the contrary!
With one exception:
Nowadays, the outer panel is placed on the outside of a nail batten 28x70 or 34x70,
so you get an air gap behind the outer panel to handle penetrating moisture.
But maybe this is already included in your construction, it is not quite clear.

If it's a solid timber frame, then you should have an air gap between it and the outer panel, yes.
Actually, the asfaboard, or a wind barrier, should perhaps be placed on the outside of the timber. The idea is that the outer panel should be ventilated on the inside so any moisture can dry out, and any penetrating water should be able to drain away.
Yes, log frame. I would prefer not to move or demolish the fiberboard and the interior wall...
Would you keep the construction as it is and just place nailing battens horizontally between the outer panel and the log frame?
Or is this alternative better: leave the old fiberboard in place but put new fiberboard on the outside of the log frame and then nailing battens on the outside of the fiberboard under the outer panel?

Yes, that's probably what I would have done. So, placed wind barrier or asfaboard on the frame, then battens and paneling. Because I believe it's at least as important to windproof as it is to insulate old houses.
By the way, no problem mounting door and window so there's about 10 cm reveal on the outside? Are trim boards suitable for withstanding, for example, rain on the reveal?

It works to have a 10cm reveal on the outside, but most people usually prefer to have most of the reveal on the inside, mainly for aesthetic reasons!
I added extra insulation to an old house with 80 mm of external foam + 22 mm batten + 22 mm panel = 124 mm.
Minus the old siding boards we took down, the net was only about 120 mm.
It looked completely OK, and no one complained about the windows and doors "receding" a bit into the façade.
Very nice to avoid moving out windows and building new reveals indoors while insulating from the outside. And the windows are actually better protected when they're not flush with the façade.
