I have a hole in the floor of the garage. One could also refer to it as a small grease pit.

I need a hatch that I can cover it with and that can be walked on. Preferably not too heavy.

What material is best and how should I carry out the construction work? The hole spans 108 cm x 180 cm.

I have thought of a few different approaches myself, but I am open to any tips I can get. Let's start with a blank slate :)

I'm in the same situation here, planning to build a hatch over a lubrication pit measuring 4000*995. I'm considering how the strength will be with 45-reglar held together by decking underneath.

I would have chosen plywood, and then glue-screwed 45-reglar across underneath, maybe a 70 "in the middle"... If it's supposed to cover 4 meters, I would have made it in two parts...

Plywood is a good idea! I think I might even use OSB to save a bit of money. I'm planning to use 28*145 battens crosswise (995 measurement) and then OSB on top. That leaves 2 mm to possibly put chequer plate on if I want to make it look nicer. I think I'll make it in 3 parts to make it more manageable.

I'm mostly worried if it will hold to let the hatch rest on the "notches" along the long sides that build 50-70 mm on each side, but since I’m not going to put a car on it and only walk, it should work, I think.
