Hello!

The entrance stairs when we bought the house were terribly terrible. Planning to build new ones. I would like to expand the platform itself near the door; there's quite limited space now. What I'm wondering about is the foundation blocks and their placement. How much overhang can the platform have with the existing foundation block as support? I don't want to spend too much time. The stairs will be redone in a couple of years when we enclose them as we build the deck.
What solution would you generally recommend for me to get a decent staircase?

And please, this is my first staircase I'm building. Bought the house not too long ago, so my building skills are at a beginner level. But it will be fun to start! So please try to be pedagogical with me.

Have a nice Sunday!

  • Wooden entry stairs with red outline for planned renovation; attached to light green house, gravel area below, adjacent broom.
  • Old wooden exterior staircase with concrete support post, next to a green wooden house wall, over gravel ground, in need of renovation and extension.
  • Old wooden steps and railing with visible wear and moss, surrounded by a gravel area with a broom nearby.
If you want to use the existing plinths and extend the resting plane with an overhang on the beams, it is easiest to double up beams of the same dimension that are currently there. You line and screw them together.

Okay, thanks for the tip! How much overhang do you think is safe to go with?

It depends on the dimensions of the beams and the measurements of the staircase.
