Hello! There is a possible old moisture damage under the exterior stairs in the basement ceiling. You could see on the drywall that it was brown at the corner just under the exterior stairs. I tore away the damaged drywall in the ceiling and found a lot of dry rotten wood, looks like bark. It is tight between the stairs and the wall now, previously it was not. See pictures, should one just lay new drywall or what should be done about it? It is dry there.
I would probably leave it open until autumn and the autumn rains, then you'll know better if it's really dry. That it's dry right now doesn't prove much.
Replace it, but first make sure that it really, really is sealed tightly. Water seems to live by the same philosophy as Hannibal: "If we can't find a way, we'll make a way."
You don't want to have to redo it again in a few years.
The house doesn't collapse from that damage, but it's unnecessary if the floor were to crack open. I have received help with this from a professional person and can therefore conclude the thread.
