Hello all you who can,

How do you feel about attaching a heavy chandelier with steel wires? The chandelier is very heavy and will be attached with four steel wires in a loop in the ceiling. The loop holds. It is attached to a beam and has previously supported an even heavier chandelier.

My question is about the best way to attach the four plastic-coated wires that hold up the chandelier. The wire is threaded through fittings on the chandelier and creates a loop that is fastened with two wire clamps. (see image)

Question: How important is it to strip the wire before fastening it? Can it be secured without stripping the plastic off, or could this mean that the wire might slip inside the plastic coating? Is there any rule/standard/common sense on how to do this safely?

Grateful for your collective wisdom.

Regards

/richard

  • Steel cable secured with two wire rope clamps, forming a loop for hanging a heavy chandelier. The cable is plastic-coated, and the image focuses on its fastening technique.

The wire does not slide in the plastic cover, and with two wire locks as shown in the picture, the wire will break before they release. You don't need to peel anything. Just go ahead.

It will probably be fine, but won't it look nicer with a traditional chain?

Nah. It's not a traditional crown but a modern thing. Traditionally, I would have gone with a chain, but for this one, a wire is best.
