We have removed the old wallpaper all the way down to the wall frame in our newly purchased archipelago house. On this frame (made of raw horizontal boards), we are going to screw up new covering panels. But I'm a bit skeptical about drywall just because there's a risk that it might be too tight and therefore cause subsequent problems because the old house (built in 1924) might not be able to breathe properly. Is that correct? Is it - from that perspective - better to put up Masonite panels, or are they just as tight?
Gypsum is not dense, yet it is easy to work with, inexpensive, fire-insulating, sound-insulating, can be spackled and painted, and above all, it does not move with temperature and humidity changes like wood does.
