I have a neighbor who is building a new house.
Now they have reached the point where they are starting on the roof structure.
Just under two weeks ago, the laminated beam that will be the ridge was put in place. This has now been lying completely unprotected against the weather for two weeks, can you do that?
It has rained a lot and then frozen on some nights. Doesn't the beam get damaged by this?

Lumber should never be left unprotected against either sun or moisture. This only indicates laziness or ignorance to treat wood in such a manner. Lumber should be stored under cover and placed on laths if you are a professional.

I also think it seems strange. Especially since this is a new construction of a villa in the upper price segment. Then you would think the builders should know better? I mean, when you're building a two-story villa of surely 300 sqm, you would think they could protect the beam once it's in place, right? Strange.

I don't know if glulam is different, but during site-built construction, it's quite common to build the frame without protection, i.e., the studs can withstand rain. It's only when you get to insulation, paneling, etc., that protection becomes important.

Glulam is usually plastic-wrapped when it arrives :/

I usually don't remove more than necessary. Sure, it's hard to weatherproof a frame erection. But it usually doesn't take many days before the roof is covered with roofing felt.

The roof is still far from finished. Only the ridge beam and the rafters from ridge to foot are in place. The roof is therefore completely open. The glulam beams are not covered in plastic. So the ridge beam has been in place now for 2 weeks without protection?!

Has the house collapsed yet?
