Considering installing floor gypsum on top of a plank subfloor (32mm) to get it completely smooth before laying the final floor. The subfloor is reused, screwed with 5x70mm screws, and is 60 years old, so it's not entirely even between the joints. May need sanding.

I was thinking of screwing it but have read that it should also be glued. Is glue necessary? I'd rather avoid chemicals and mess...

I'm using a screw gun, so no problem driving many screws.

Many of us dislike glue in building constructions as a knee-jerk reaction, but in some situations, it's necessary. If you're going to have ceramic material on top of floor gypsum, I think glue is a must.

What does the glue do that screws don't when screwed with 15x15 cm? That’s a lot of screws...

I used fix on a wooden floor when I was laying gypsum.
After 12 years, the floor is completely silent with no cracks anywhere.
I cut the floor gypsum so that the joints were in the middle of the board.

Good question. I've learned this the hard way myself. Small movements occur in the vertical direction that cause the joints not to hold. In many construction contexts, it's screw bonding that's needed to achieve full cooperation between the materials.
